BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE WONDERFUL ENERGY ROME, May 31 To-day is the 81st birthday of His Holiness Pope Pius XI. The official organ of the Vatican, Osservatore Romano, pays tribute to the Pope's wonderful energy in >. carrying on his duties, in spit© of his recent illness. Pope Pius was born at Desio, Italy, on May 31, 1857, and was formerly Cardinal Ratti, Archbishop of Milan. He was elected Pope in succession to Pope Benedict XV. on February 6, 1922. He first became seriously ill in December. 1936, when he had to cancel the granting of audiences. However, his health improved, although the illness has recurred at intervals. In his younger days the Pope was an accomplished mountaineer.
