PILFERING CHARGE
' WHITE HOUSE CLERK | AUTHORITIES SET A TRAP ' • WASHINGTON. May 24 The arrest of a confidential mail iclerk at' the home of President Roosevelt, the White House, on a charge of pilfering from the President's mail, caused a rumour to-day that documents containing military or Stato secrets might have been tampered with. The rumour, however, was immediately officially denied.
Tho clerk was trapped when Federal Bureau 'of Investigation operatives placed thrco marked dollar bills in an envelope, which ho is alleged to liavo rifled. He had a large quantity of goods, including dresses, coats, lamps and other objects at his home, all ostensibly pilfered from the mails. Tho investigation began when White House attaches missed their personal belongings and suspected that the parcel post had been tampered with.
