NEW AIR TERROR
FAST fURSUIT MACHINES, | AMERICAN ARMY ORDER WASHINGTON, May 24 Thirteen giafit pursuit aeroplanes, , capable of a speed of 400 miles an hour, have been ordered by the United States War Department. Of revolutionary design, they have •been subjected to eight months of secret tests. Carrying six guns, includ- ! ing two anti-aircraft cannon, they can ! fight at 'an altitude of 30,000 ft. The 13 machines will cost the equivalent of £792,000. - : ,
Tests of a 41-ton flying-boat for the : transatlantic service will begin in a fortnight; It is the first of six such , machines ' now 'in..' various stages of construction: Built by the Boeing Aircraft Corporation, it will carry 50 passengers.
The maximum speed will be 200 miles an hour, and the cruising speed on long flights will be 150 miles an hour.
A 12-hours' service between San Francisco and New York with aeroplanes flying at 20,000 ft. will bo started next October.
