VAALSO UNLUCKY

GROTjND lost at staet HIRANGI OUTCLASSES FIELD ' JOLLY BEGGAR'S EFFORT The promise Salesman cave of rfe- : turning to form when he ran a good race at Tc 11 apa recently was fulfilled when he scored narrowly in a fine finish in the first division of the Jervois Handicap. Salesman was only , 12th in demand in the field of 16 and . paid a solid dividend. He was in the "lead from the start with Alytli and ran on better than usual to hold off Dragon Moth' and Melvanui, both of whom challenged strongly in the run homo. Dragon Moth and 'Melvanui again displayed ability to act well in . soft going, and are very fit at present, j Barrister was closer in fourth position j at the finish than at any other stage and he should be suited by a longer distance. The favourite, Young Paddon, lost his chance at the start by being hopelessly left, and others who got away badly were El Meynell and Love Parade. Rajanya and Alyth showed up prominently until well into the straight. Steeples Contest Benefited by recent racing Kinkle finished well to win the Green Lane Steeplchase from London, who made a splendid attempt to lead over the last round. Kinkle may have won a little easier only for being checked when attempting to go through on the inside after jumping the second fence on the hill. However, he finished strongly and was always a winner in the run from the last fence from London and Lucidus, who had a spirited tussle for second. The class was weak, but the placed horses are all in good form at present. Royal Mimic appeared likely when he moved up to the leader at the top of the hill the second tune, but his weight steadied him, and he was well beaten. Royal Mimic now makes a. lot of noise, and appears to lie touched in the wind. The three-year-old Vaalso was made a pronounced favourite for the 6econci division of the Jervois Handicap and he recorded a fine effort to finish second after being left several lengths behind the field. Vaalso fought on m the most courageous fashion under the whip in the last furlong after making up a lot of ground, and it appeared as if he would have won with an even jump-out. Victory went to the hitherto disappointing Mai de Mer, "'ho followed Bonnybelle, Pirate King anil Ohmaha into the straight, and was too solid in the run home. Mai de Mer finished better than usual after being ridden in behind, which evidently suits him. Pirate Kinc. always well plnced, improved upon his recent efforts for third and Captain Bruce made a very creditable showing for fourth. Bonnybelle faded in the last furlong, after making the pace Ohmaha should be benefited bv the run. Porotlti Disappoints The favourite, Porotiti. disappointed badly in the Penroso Hurdles, dropping right back after being prominent over the first three fences, and finishing a long way behind the placegetters. The race was easily won by Full of Scotch, outsider but one of tho field of eight, who gave nothing a chance over the last six furlongs and had something in hand at the finish. The only one to get near nim in the final stages was Inness Lad, who made a game effort without able to trouble the winner. Lady England did best of the others for third. The rest were hopelessly beaten, although Bass went well for a mile and a-quarter and may improve with the race. High Star battled on for fourth, but Chief Lap tired after being prominent early. It was only Full o Scotch's second start over hurdles and he looks like being useful. Splendidly handled by J. H. Mcßae tho third fancy Ermation narrowly defeated the favourite, Huskie, in an exciting finish in the Great Northern Hurdles, which was an excellent contest throughout. Erination was never further back than second and he led practically throughout the last round. ]t appeared as if he would be beatt .i when Huskio headed him at the ast fence, but he came again in the last little bit and took the honours by a head. Huskie made a valiant bid tor victory and the fact that he co\ ered a little more ground than Lrination during the running probably made the difference between winning and losing. The top-weight Jolly Beggar made a determined bid on the rails in the last furlong and he was responsible tor a meritorious effort in being less than half a length from the winner. Silk Sox looked likely when he drew up on the outside of the leaders at the last fence, but did not come homo quite as well as the place-getters. However, he was a verv creditable fourth. Jvuberis went well for two miles, but the others were well beaten. Brilliant Finishing Run Flashing up with a brilliant run in the last furlong, tho little-fancied Cheval de Volee got up in the last few strides to defeat the favourite Va - mint. Cheval de Volee was well back most of the way and it was not until the last half-furlong that he came prominently into the picture. Valmint had the pin of the race on tho rails, and, after following Jack Tar and Tybalt into tho straight, was just outstayed. The consistent Kilonsa made a fine bid for victory and she looked like winning when she dashed to the front just after passing the distance. However, she weakened a little in the last 30 yards. Knight of Australia was closer in fourth potation at the finish and Tybalt was fifth after getting all the best of tho start and having a splendid run. Valamito and Enge were pro-

minent until reaching tho straight, biv faded in the last furlong. Day Wind made a creditable showing, and Flood Tide did well enough to indicate that he is close to form. .Tack Tar attempted to lead over the last mile and in spite of the fact that he hung badly he surrendered the lead only about a furlong from the post. On the strength of his good track form Hirangi was supported down to odds-on for the Hunt Club Hurdles and ho justified the confidence by winning very easily. Hirangi went to the front about six furlongs from homo and tho only one to give hi.nv any opposition was Aramis, who paid a good price for second. Hirangi's rider allowed him to slow up after crossing the'last fence, but with a few kicks he sprinted j away from Aramis, who made a game j effort after being almost down at, tho | second to last fence. Smilin' Thru | plodded on better than the others to be a moderate third. She stays well, : hut does not appear<to have much pace. - Pirini looked certain to be in a place until he almost fell at the second to last fence and was pulled up. The riders of Aramis and Piripi made remarkable recoveries. Prince Acre in Form Benofited by recent racing Prince Acre scored his first success since last July when he prevailed in the Members' Handicap from the little-fancied Gay Scton, who ran one of his best races. Jumping out smartly from No. 2, Prince Acre ran on in determined fashion at the finish, where he was all out to stall off Gay Seton. Te Mqnowai made a good showing for third, making a solid effort in the straight. Maori Song, after being badly placed early and coming out wide in the straight, was a good fourth and may do better. The favourite Hunting Blood displayed plenty of brilliance in leading the field for about, five furlongs, but failed to run on, tiring quickly at the end. Surella looked a possibility below the distance, but finished weakly. Palustre wrfs prominent until well into the straight and.Notium was closer at the finish than at any other stage.
