NORTHERN VICTOR

CAREER OF ERINATION BREO ON STAYING LINES WINNINGS NOW OVER £2OOO A notable victory and easily the most important of his career iyas scored b.v Erination, when he won the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday. Trained by Mr. J. H. Greenhead, who holde him on lease from Mrs. A. Loomb Erination was given a rather unorthodox preparation at ltotorua, where he did a course of road and hill work that brought him to the high pitch of fitness that enabled him to pull through in a stern tussle in the run from the last fence. He had not raced sine# the Easter meeting at Ellerslie in April, when he won the Brighton Hurdles for the second year in succession, but he would probably have run at Te Rapa last month only for his owner overlooking the nominations. Bred by the late F. E. Loomb, who trained the 1919 Great Northern winner Cynic, and Mr. D. It. Walker, Erination is an eight-year-old chestnut gelding by Illumination from Erinagh. by Elysian from Crec.v, by Hotchkiss from Crescent, by Castor. After racing unsuccessfully, on eight occasions as a two-year-old, he did not appear again until he was six, when he won his first start over hurdles at the Taumarunui meeting at Paeroa on October 5. 1935. A week later he won the Trial Hurdles and the Manukau Hurdles at the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting. A little later in the season he met with an injury that put him out of action for nine months, and at one stage it was feared that he might not race again. Fortunately he made a good recovery, and as a seven-year-old he showed a return to form in winning the Manawaru Hurdles at Te Aroha. and a; month later the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie, a victory he repeated this year. Up to the present, Erination has gained seven firsts, four seconds and a third, and his earnings amount to £2155. Me is engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase on Thursday with 9.13, and Mr. Greenhead is hopeful that he will complete the double, as he jumps coimtry well and was fourth in tho'Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie last Easter. Erination is not subject to a rehandicap for his win yesterday, as horses cannot be rehandicapped iin a steeplechase for success over hurdles. i' " . RESULTS REPEATED r , [COMPARISON WITH LAST YEAR An interesting aspect of the results at Ellerslie yesterday was the prominent running of some horses who were placed in tho same events last year. For example, Huskie and Jolly Beggar, who filled the minor places behind Sandy Dix, were again second and third respectively to Erination. Kinkle, winner of the Greerdanc Steeples, was third a year ago and Prince Acre, who won the Members' Handicap, was also third in the previous contest. Valmint has now been runner-up in the Cornwall Handicap in successive years. STEWARDS' INQUIRIES riCASES OF INTERFERENCE Following the running of the Cornwall Hancficap at Ellerslie yesterday, an inquiry was opened regarding some interference suffered by Flood Tide as the field was going out of the straight, and it was adjourned until Thursday. An inquiry is also to be held on Thursday concerning interference to Maori Song, Crooning and Johnny Walls in the Members' Handicap.
