TYPISTS

Sir,—l read with great surprise an article in Monday's Herald regarding a shortage of typists in Auckland, and my surprise was largely occasioned by the fact that an Auckland business man had stated that though he was offering a salary of _£4 10s a week lie was unable to obtain a senior typist. I can only imagine that lie did not advertise the position, or, if he did, that he omitted to mention the salary. Of course, the shock to the Auckland typists would be severe were they to read in their morning paper of a firm actually willing to pay such a tremendous wage, but once the first shock had worn off 1 am sure most of them would rush to their typewriters to try and obtain such a rare position A few months ago I came to New Zealand from overseas, where 1 was fortunate enough to win on two occasions the Capetown typing championship. Back in New Zealand after years of overseas experience, I set about obtaining a position, and was informed that 1 had just arrived at the right time, as trade was booming once more. Such certainly seemed to be the case, but I soon found that, though trade might have improved. typists' salaries had definitely dropped, and I was amazed to receive offers of "good, senior positions" carrying a salary of £2 10s to £2 15s a week. However, I have now found a well-paid position. The above explains my surprise at the salary offered by the local business man, and 1 can only assure him that if he is really in want of a competent senior typist he has only to advertise the salary he is willing to pay and lie should be inundated with replies.
