RATING VALUE
ADDITIONS IN CITY MANY STATE HOUSES The completion of a supplementary valuation roll by the city valuer, Mr. P. F. Xotley, has added nearlV £IB.OOO in rateable value to tho total on which rates can be collected in the city during tho current rating year. The main valuation roll, which closed on January 15, shows a total of £2,740,604. As the rating year begins on June 1, there is a gap of over four months during which many new buildings are completed and theso are entered on the supplementary roll so that they may be assessed lor rating. included in the supplementary roll are 130 of the new State houses at Orakei, which have an aggregate rateable value of £7597, while privatelyowned properties coming on the rating list for the first time show a total rateable value of over £IO,OOO.
A peculiar position obtains with regard to new buildings completed after June 1 in any year. They cannot be assessed for rates and escape liability until the roll is compiled again in the following January, although the owner will still be liable to pay the rates on the section previously charged, while he can also be called upon to pay water rates. Similarly, if a property is destroyed by fire during the rating year it remains liable for rates until the end of the term.
