CENTENNIAL PLANS
GAMES AND FISHING WINTER SPORTS PROPOSED AUCKLAND SUGGESTIONS Particulars of a proposed New Zealand Centennial Games meeting to be held in conjunction with the Centennial in 1940, were discussed by the sporting sub-committee of the Auckland Centennial Council at a meeting last night. It was decided to recommend to the provincial council that this should be the contribution of the sporting bodies of Auckland. The suggested dates were from January 22 to February 3, 1940. Tho sub-committee also resolved to recommend that the co-operation of other centres in New Zealand should be secured, so that this period would be kept free from championship meetings, to enable a full representation from New Zealand and overseas to be secured for the games in Auckland. Among the other sporting activities which were discussed in connection with the Centennial celebrations, was the proposed deep-sea game fishing competition. With a view to meeting the convenience of both local and overseas anglers, the sub-committee recommended to the provincial council that tho contest should extend from December 30, 1939, to April 20, 1940. It was also recommended that the New Zealand Centennial winter games should be held during a fortnight in August, 1940.
