KURUPO TAREHA FORMER GOLF CHAMPION KEEN INTEREST IN SPORT []JY TELECWAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Sunday The dontli has occurred at his home at Waiohiki, after a long illness, of Kurupo Tareha, one of the principal Maori chiefs of Hawke's Bay, tlie only Maori who has won tlie New Zealand amateur golf championship, and a noted all-round athleto. Born at Waiohiki in 1870, Kurupo Tareha was the younger son of Tareha To Moananui, a leading Hawke's Bay chief and the first Maori memher of a Now Zealand Parliament. Like his father, Kurupo Tareha was a Royalist. He was educated at the Moeance Mission College. He was one of those chosen to represent the Maori race at the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in ISD7. He was sergeant-major of the contingent, and in commemoration of that occasion he was presented with a sword by the New Zealand Government.

Dominion Tournaments In 1903 Kurupo Tareha again came into prominence, this time when he won the Now Zealand amateur golf championship at the Waiohiki links. He also competed in New Zealand championshit) tournaments at Duncdin and Auckland. Although he won the Manawatu championship several times, ho was never successful in the Hawke's Bay championship tournament. Until a fo\v years ago ho was a member of the Napier Golf Club. Illness then prevented him from continuing as an active member, but his intorcst in tho game was continued as a coach. Ho was one of tho founders of the New Zealand Maori Golf Association, and at the time of his death was its patron. Interest in Other Sports Other sports in which he took part were Rugby football, cycling, boxing and riflo shooting. He was a member of tho Ruahine Rifle Club for several years and was a keen riflo shot. One of his two sons, Kapi Tareha, has carried on his golfing prowoss. Kapi Tareha has won the New Zealand Maori 'amateur championship twice, tho Hawko's Bay championship nine times, and the championship of southern Hawko's Bay three times. Kurupo Tareha is survived by his second wife, two sons—Kapi, of Waipawa, and J. Tareha, of Waiohiki—and a daughter, Miss H. Tareha, of Waiohiki. His first wife died some time ago.

As a tribute to the memory of the late Mr. Tareha, the Napier Golf Club decided to suspend play 011 the Waiohiki links yesterday afternoon between 2.15 and 3 p.m. At a meeting of the committee of the club a vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs. Tareha and her family.
