FIGURES FOR DOMINION OPERATIONS BY THE STATE The State housing scheme was probably largely responsible for a marked increase in the permits issued for- the erection of new dwellings in the larger towns in the financial year 1937-38. The Government Statistician reveals that the number of permits for dwellings issued in the year ' totalled 4872, compared with 3282 in the previous financial year. The peak month was March last when 547 permits were issued, the total including 231 issued to the Government Housing Department. In that month the department also started the erection of 86 dwellings in localities outside the larger towns. v The total value represented by permits issued for all buildings in 1937-38 was £8,161,939, an increase of 50.2 per cent above the total of £5,433,000 in ] 936-37. , The value represented by building permits generally issued last March was £829,764, an increase of £152,953 above the total in February and of £342,846 above that in March, 1937.
