RAILWAY TRAFFIC
INCREASES RECORDED PASSENGERS AND GOODS Passenger journeys by rail during the year ended on March 31, 1938, totalled 22,441,212, according to figures issued by the Government Statistician. This represented an increase of 5.7 per cent above the total in 1936-37. The tonnage of goods handled totalled 7,616.494, an increase of 10.3 per cent over the tonnage for the preceding year. Statistics of net ton-miles run are not yet available for the full year; but for the 48 weeks ended on March 5 last. 508.288.000 ton-miles were run, an increase of 14.9 per cent over the total in the same period of 1936-37.
