NEWCASTLE STRIKE
HOPES FOR SETTLEMENT SHORTAGE OF BUILDING IRON (Received May 9, 9.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 9 _The prolonged strike at Lysaght's galvanised iron works at Newcastle took a favourable turn to-day, when Mr. Justice Cantor announced the conditions which he considered should govern the immediate resumption of work. Lysaght's representative accepted the conditions, while the men's representatives will submit them to mass meetings to-morrow. Since the strike began nearly three months ago over 700 men have been idle, and therQ has been a great shortage of galvanised iron, resulting in building being greatly hampered.
