50 YEARS A FIREMAN
MR. J. G. WALTON'S RECORD GREYMOUTH BRIGADE OFFICIAL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] : GREYMOUTH, Monday The secretary of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, Mr. J. G. "Walton, to-day completed 50 years as a fire brigadesman, a unique honour in the annals of New Zealand fire brigade history. Mr. Walton first joined the brigade on August 13, 1885, resigning in July, 1891, and rejoining on March 15, 1894. He has been an active member since and has served under eight superintendents and attended over 300 fire alarms and 1000 meetings and parades. In 1900 Mr. Walton was president of the Brigades' Accident Society, which had a strength of 109 brigades. He is the oldest living past president of the society and the only active past president. At Napier in 1903 he was elected president of the United Fire Brigades' Association, and later was made an honorary life member of that body and presented with the association's medal, representing 144 brigades. Mr. Walton has been secretary of the Greymouth Fire Brigade for 45 years, and was instrumental in the formation of the West Coast Fire Brigades' Association. He is still an active fire fighter.
