AUSTRALIAN- SCHEME LEGISLATION INTRODUCED OPERATION IN JANUARY UNEMPLOYMENT* PLAN LATER By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received May 4, 11.49 p.m.) CANBERRA. May 4 The Federal Treasurer, Mr. R. G. Casey, introduced in the House of Representatives to-day two bills to give effect to the Government's proposals for compulsory national health and pensions insurance. Mr. Casey said the Government hoped to have the scheme in operation by January, 1939. He pointed out that it would directly apply to 1,750,000 persons and indirectly would benefit 3,600,000, including the sick, widows and orphans. Mr. Casey explained in reply to Mr. J: Curtin, the Leader of the Opposition, that unemployment insurance would have to come later under a separate plan, owing to the many difficulties of embodying it in the present legislation.
