TWO YEARS AT SEA
DEAF AND DUMB MAN STOWAWAY ON A LINER [FROM A HP EC I AT, CORRESPONDENT] LON.DOX, April 14 A deaf and dumb man who hoarded the British liner Salamaua two years ago has remained at sea ever since. Thirty countries have refused him entry. Now he has been made an assistant steward on salary. When the liner called at Tilbury this week from Rabaul, New Guinea, the deaf and dumb man went ashore, nnder escort, for the first time. And then only for an hour. When he is in port he often spends his time painting landscapes. Leo, as the 25-year-old stowaway has boon christened by the seamen, claims to be French, but does not know where his parents are. France will not accept him back. He mnst remain at sea until some country admits him. He is not able to produce any definite proof of his nationality or birth. The captain has found that Leo easily understands commands, and many of the native crew have learned to interpret the stowaway's signs.
