HUNT SEASON

PAKURANGA OPENING MEET AT EAST TAMAKI LORD GALWAY TAKES PART FOyR CHILDREN ALSO RIDE The Pakuranga Hunt opened its season under excellent conditions on Saturday, when the inaugural meet was held at East Tamaki Hall. The attendance at the informal luncheon held in the hall was the largest for' many years and the number of riders following the hounds in the initial run was also bigger than in late years. The Governor-General, Lord Gal way, and Lady Galway were present, and His Excellency and their four children rode with the hunt. Mounted on Dandy, 0110 of the horses of the huntsman, Mr. P. H. Smith, Lord Galway rode out the first run. He then returned to Auckland to leave for Wellington. Lady Galway did not ride, but spent an energetic afternoon taking cine-camera films of various phases of the hunt. The Vice-Regal party included Major R. G. G. Byron, military secretary, and Major G. B. and Mrs. Parkinson. Before taking to horse, the master, Mr. 11. Bullock-Webster, v welcomed Their Excellencies and 'members. He mentioned the fine example which was shown by the enthusiastic riding of Their Excellencies' children in the runs aiul the various activities of the hunt The master expressed the hunt's appreciation of the interest shown by the farmers in the district arid conveyed thanks for their courtesy in granting permission to hunt over their land. An appeal to non-riders to respect the farming properties was also made by the master Excellent Sport Throwing off on Mr. A. Sherry's farm a short distance from the main road, the hounds immediately put up a strong-running hare. The scent was good and the 16 couples in the pack ] ran keenly. The hare took a course ! through Mr. F. Wright's property over j Mr. H. Phillips' farm, and after mak- j ing a straight run through the pad- i docks of Mr. L. Ross and Mr. C. Mills it crossed the road to Mr. W. Stubbings' farm. Still running .strongly, the hare passed across Mr. G. Gillard's fields and doubled back to cross the road and was eventually killed on Mr. Rawlinson's property. It was a fine run with good going throughout. A hare was seen passing along the road as the hounds were casting about and this was followed. It turned into Mr. J. Ross' and Mrs. N. McCathie's paddocks and. crossing the creek, it circled Flat Bush Church and then back to Mr. Mills' farm. Swimming the creek it reached Mr. M. Johnston's property and doubled back and wa3 finally run to a kill on Mr. Mills' farm. A third hare was started on the 1 same property and it passed over Mr. 1 Phillips' and Mr. Wright's pastures to run' along the creek edge before doubling back to take to the farmlands of Mr. R. Kemp and Mr. E. Woods. It was followed by some cattle and made for the milking sheds of Mr. Mills' farm, where it was necessary to call off the hounds. Keen Follower The sport was said to be excellent, with hares plentiful. Among the keen- * est of the riders was the GovernorGeneral's son, the Hon. Simon t Monckton-Arundell.
