SOCIAL SERVICE SCHEME

Sir. —Could you inform me if in the proposed legislation for social security there is adequate safeguard against a Hood of immigration to New Zealand? It would appear probable that thero would be, otherwise a great influx from less favoured countries to this paradise of radios, motor-cars, totalisators and at least £'.'3 a week for elderly couples, where spending is a virtue and thrift almost a vice. Is New Zealand to bo a haven for the derelicts of other parts of the Empire? If there are not stringent safeguards, the burden upon the native New Zealander will surely be intolerable. Scrutator.

Sir, —The Government's superannuation scheme has raised a loud chorus of disapproval from the "haves" who are called upon to assist tho "have not's." A special outcry is being made about youth having to pay for a pension they may not live to receive, and obviously would not need. The young folk of to-day spend more in a month than present recipients of pensions spent in a year in their young days, enjoy far more leisure time, and a hundred-fold more entertainment and comfort. The majority of young folks should also consider that their own parents are included in tho proposal. Sixty-Six.
