WAIKARAKA CEMETERY

Sir, —A recent visit to the Waikaraka Cemetery at Onehunga showed an appalling state of neglect of the paths and general surroundings. The paths are orergrown with, weeds and coarse grass and apparently have not had a clean up for some time. Surely the controlling body draws sufficient revenue from the sale of grave, plots to keep the place in decent order. Relatives of those occupying their last resting places mostly endeavour to keep these places neat and sightly, but the effort seems wasted when one views the dreadful state all around. As one with relatives buried in Purewa and Waikumete, I had occasion on Easter Day to visit all three and was dismayed to find Waikaraka Cemetery showing such disorder. I notice that fresh areas arc being prepared for the receipt of burials, but if the public view the way the older portion is being neglected they may decide to inter their dead somewhere else where they are not so likely to be shamed by the unkempt surroundings.
