MUSEUM EXTENSION

PROPOSAL TO MINISTER PRESENT WORK COMMENDED The work of the Auckland Institute and Museum in spreading knowledge of the natural sciences was warmly commended by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, during a visit which he paid to the War Memorial Museum last week. The Minister was accompanied by the president of the institute, Sir Carrick Robertson, the director of the museum, Mr. Gilbert Archey, and the assistant-director, Mr. A. W. B. Powell. A proposal was placed before Mr. Parry for the extension of a wine of the museum building for the purpose of providing a. lecture hall and class and study rooms, which are regarded as necessary for the extended educational services undertaken by the institute. It was pointed out to the Ministor that the appointment of an educational officer had resulted in increased popularity of lectures, and there was need for better facilities for this part of the institute's work. "The work which you are doing is of great value to the community," Mr. Parry said. "The Government is keenly interested in.all undertakings which aim at teaching the people the value and beauty of their country's native bush and bird life, as they form one of the best methods of preserving the attractions of the Dominion." The Minister added that he would submit the institute'ii proposals to the Government as soon as opportunity offered.
