CRUELTY TO HORSE
BOY INFORMER ASSAULTED MAORI AND SON FINED [JJY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, Tuesday A Maori youth, Whatiu Parekura, was charged before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., at Opotiki, with assaulting a small boy by kicking him and with cruelty to a horse by wounding it with a sheath knife. Parekura Huritu, father of the accused Parekura, was charged with assaulting the boy by striking him with a tlog chain. Both accused were represented by Mr. Hei. Sorgciuit J. Isbister stated that Parekura and the small boy were endeavouring to catch a horse in a paddock and, being unsuccessful, decided to drivo it into a near by cowshed. The horse broke away and when it was passing Parekura he throw or pushed a sheath knife into it. Parekura then warned the little boy not to tell anybody of his act. The boy told his father, who informed the owner of the horse. Next day Parekura stopped tho boy on his way to school and gave him a thrashing. Further on the boy was waylaid bv Parekura's father, who hit him around the legs with a dog chain. Parekura Mas fined £1 and costs on the assault charge, and £2 and costs on tho charge of wounding the horse. Huritu was fined £2 and costs.
