OILFIELDS DISPUTE
REQUEST BY BRITAIN RESTORATION OF PROPERTY (Received April 10, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 0 The British Government has instructed its Minister at Mexico City to inform the Mexican Government that its expropriation decree regarding oilfields is regarded as inherently unjustified and to formally request the restoration of property belonging to the Mexican Eagle Company. Britain's' request has shocked official circles, according to the Mexico City correspondent of the New York Times, but it is suggested that it will be met by a flat refusal. The British Note held that, while in certain circumstances expropriation is' justifiable, this expropriation was essentially a punitive action rather than an action undertaken for the national welfare, and that the conflict is not over wages, but over the right of companies to manage their own properties instead of having management by the workers. PAYING THE COMPANIES WOMEN<»ASKED TO HELP (Received April 10, 7.5 p.m.) MEXICO CITY, April 9 Women, throughout Mexico have been invited to give their jewellery and silverware to the Government to help to pay off the foreign oil companies. President Cardenas is examining Britain's demand for the restoration of the oil company property. It is expected that ho will reject it.
