FORTY SHEEP LOST
TRAPPED IN A DRAIN WILD EFFORTS TO ESCAPE THE WORK OF STRAY DOGS [BY TELEGRAPH PRES-S ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday About 40 sheep were drowned in a ditch in Hagley Park on Saturday morning as the result of the mischievous work of six stray dogs of various breeds. A mob of SO odd sheep were harassed bv the dogs to such an extent that they chose an open drain leading to Miecarton at the south end of the Christehureh Nurses' Home as a means of escape. This choice proved fatal. After descending a 9ft. bank into the ditch the sheep travelled down the drain to a culvert leading under the road. The animals then found that they were trapped.
In the mad scramble that ensued the sheep began to pile up and there was just sufficient water in the drain to drown those that struggled oil the bottom of the ditch.
