PROBLEMS OF DIET
CORRECT FOOD VALUES ADDRESSES TO WOMEN'S CLUB Members and their friends met at the New Women's Club on Friday to hear addresses given by Dr. Violet Hastings and Miss A. E. Lorimer on "Diet and Health." The importance of diet in regard to the prevention of disease was discussed by Dr. Hastings. She said that diseases that were preventable by means of a well balanced diet frequently occurred when food was less fortified by minerals, vitamins and other essentials. In some diseases, the exact food deficiency was known and the diseases could be produced and cured at will.
The necessity for scientific investigation into the nutritive value of foods offered for sale, thus ensuring that the housewife got real food value for her money, was emphasised by Miss Lorimer. She gave details of the experiments carried out by the New Zealand Women's Food Value League, which by means of analysis of the foods used in the Dominion and by the dissemination of dietary needs planned to broadcast a better knowledge of food values. Afternoon tea was served later, the hostesses being Mrs. Phethean and Mrs. Lloyd.
