DROUGHT CONDITIONS

NEW SOUTH WALES AREAS MR. LYONS ON SITUATION SYDNEY, April 8 Drought conditions prevail over the whole of the western half of New South Wales and the northern portions of Victoria. The entire wheat bolt is dry and parched awaiting rain, while livestock are being hand-fed. Domestic water supplies are extremely short, and the fruit crops have suffered severely as the result of the nnder-average rainfall.

A message from Canberra states that referring last night to London press report? thnt Australia is at present experiencing the worst drought since 1902, the Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, said the official meteorological reports did not support this statement. Mr. Lyons said he presumed that the London reports were based largely on the experience of New South Wales, in portions of which most of the low stockcarrying areas were certainly very dry, but no anxiety whatever was felt regarding the cereal prospects in the more important soyth-eastern areas of the continent.

Good rains within the next six weeks would ensure successful cropping in the dry districts.
