HOTEL AT GISBORNE good v/ork of brigade ONLY ONE ROOM DESTROYED [bt telecraph—own correspondent] GISBORXE, Friday Smart work by the fire brigade last evening saved from destruction the Royal Hotel, a large and well-known wooden structure in Gladstone Road. The outbreak was confined to the western wing. The maids' room in which th« fire broke out was gutted. The fire was first noticed by one of the sons of the licensee. The flames had a strong hold in tin? maids' room, but the brigade soon had it under control.

The hotel was built over 50 years ago and is owned by D. J. Barry and Company, Limited. The licence has been in tho hands of Mr. J. J. Martin for nearly 40 years. The hotel contains 25 public bedrooms, five sitting rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, bars and extent sive quarters for the staff.
