ROTORUA'S FINANCES

SATISFACTORY POSITION —— . "J 'f OUTSTANDING RATES' REDUCED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA. Friday The lictorua Borough Council at the close of the financial year 011 March 31 was in a better position regarding rate payments than it had been in for many years past, stated a report presented to the council at its meeting this week.

The Finance Committee reported that the total rates outstanding were only £I6OO, compared with £4306 18s at the end of March, 1937. Mr. E. T. Johnson said the Finance Committee and officers of the council were to be congratulated upon their good work. Mr. 0. H. Coleman, chairman of the Finance Committee, stated that credit for the position was due very largely to the efforts of the treasurer, Mr. L. O'Leary. An important aspect of the matter was that, where a ratepayer had no arrears, lie was more likely to be able to meet his current rates, and the position in succeeding years should remain satisfactory.
