CRUELTY TO BULL
KING OUT FEOM NOSE INCIDENT AT KUMEU TWO MEN FINED £5 EACH Charged with cruelly ill-treating a bull, by cutting its nostril with a knife, at Kunieu oil February 1, Albert Thomas Potter Wardle (Mr. Bennett) and Jveil Rae ■ (Mr. Schramm) appeared, on summons in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. C. E. Orr Walker, S.M. They were also charged with stealing a ring, valued at 2s 6d, the property of Edward John Wright. Harold Hunter, a farmer, said he was at a sale at Kumeu and saw Rae holding a bull by the ring in its nose, while Wardle cut through the nostril with a knife to free the ring. The animal bled freely. . Edward John Wright, owner of the bull, said he had entered it in the sale, and tried to remove the ring. The screw in the ring was broken, so that he had to leave it in. He gave no one permission to remove it. Wardlo, in evidence, said*"' ho saw Rae and another man c --trying to pull out the ring. him if 1 he had a knife, so thinking that the bull would suffer-less he slit the nostril. *- Rae said that a third man, not Wardle, had asked for help to get ..the ring out. This man took the ring away with him. "It is perfectly plain to me that, it was a cruel act, and it is idle for any man to suggest that it was not going to cause considerable suffering/' said the magistrate. "I have sent a man to prison for something similar, but in that case he deliberately slashed the nose of the . bull."
On the charge, of cruelty .the accused were fined £$ and costs each. The charge of theft was dismissed.
