FIFTY YEARS AGO
EXPENSE OF ARMAMENT THE MECHANISATION OF WAR The expense of armament and the increasing mechanisation of war was already becoming a matter of grave concern 50 years ago. The following extract. is taken from the Xkw Zijai.and Kkuald of April 9, 1888: "A\ar has become a more expensive luxury than ever. The public all"over the world has become tired of it and begins to wonder why international quarrels cannot be settled by any better means than the sword of a by-gone time, or the melanite shell or the dynamite gun of our own period. "And the worst of it is that all those costly innovations have only made war uglier than ever it was before- 1 — squeezing the chivalry out of it. robbing it of its old qualifying or redeeming merits. The sailor abhors the 'hog in armour,' and when armies can kill each othpr a mile or so asunder, tilt soldier is turned into a machine.''
