SENTENCE FOR ARSON
MAN SET* FIRE TO HALL QUARREL WITH THE LESSEE [by TELF.ORAPH —rRESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday In the Supreme Court to-day, Jack Cummings Williams, for arson at Greymouth, was sentenced to one year's imprisonment by Mr. Justice Johnston. Counsel said Williams had quarrelled with a hotel licensee who leased the hall to which Williams set fire. This was actually a drunken escapade. His Honor said arson might lead to loss of life, and Williams needed severer discipline than that to which he had hitherto been subject. For his own sake, and for the protection of the public, he must be sentenced, to 12 mouths' imprisonment.
