CHEAPER ELECTRICITY

TE AROHA DECISION SINGLE METER SYSTEM [BY TICLEGRArn —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TE AROHA, Tuesday A substantial reduction in the rates 'charged for electricity was made by the Te Aroha Borough Council at its meeting last night, when it decided to abolish its present system of charging different rates for the different classes of electricity and to adopt a singlo meter system. The rate to apply to all classes of electricity will in future be 3d net for the first 25 units, 2d net for the next 20, and Id net for all in excess of 45 units. The estimated decrease in revenue consequent upon this decision will bo approximately £ISOO, although almost certainly the reduced rate will lend to an increased consumption, and so reduce this loss. During the past two years the council has made reductions in electricity charges totalling ■£2600. The council also "decided to assist consumers by selling electric ranges and water heaters on the hire-purchase system with repayments spread over a period of four vears. The necessary funds can be obtained by allocating £ISOO out of accumulated surpluses to form a separate account. This will not only assist consumer, but also will result in an increased revenue.
