PROSPECTS FOR CHEESE LONDON AGENT'S OPINION [BY TELEGRAPH —I'll ESS ASSOCIATION J WELLINGTON, Tuesday The prospects for the New Zealand cheese trade with Britain during the coming season are bright, according to Mr. C. Wilson-Scars, junior, provision agent, of London, who arrived in Wellington by the Awatea to-day. The make of English factory cheese was very small last year, because of the big* increase in the consumption of milk in liquid form, he said. The latest reports from Canada, too, indicated that the make for the first part of the season was going to be light. New Zealand cheese was uniform and generally superior to the Australian product, which tended to be irregular and not yet up to standard. New Zealand's chief competitor was Canada. Canadian cheese, closer cutting andwith a better flavour, commanded a premium sometimes of as much as 10s per ewt. The New Zealand product seemed to lose some of its flavour by pasteurisation, but he considered that, with milk coining from so many different places, pasteurisation was essential, unless the factories were certain of their sources of supply. There w.?s 3 good, steady trade for New Zealand butter in Britain, but Danish still commanded a premium, particularly in the North of England, Australia ran New Zealand very close in the qualitv of its butter. "Most of the butter in Britain is sold from blocks in the shops," Mr. Wilson-Sears said. "Many people are suspicious of packet butters, unless of recognised brands, because they may have been blended with inferior produce."

THE CITY MARKETS MUSHROOMS ON SALE HEAVY VEGETABLE. SUPPLIES Apples were in only fair demand at the City Markets yesterday, and Cox Orange Pippin sold at lower rates. There was a better demand for pears, especially for tho Louie Bon Jersey variety, while oranges, which were in short supply, sold well. Mushrooms wero again on the market, and met with keen inquiry. A fresh shipment of Queensland pineapples arrived by the Wanganella, atul persimmons were available. Te Kauwhata grapes, cape gooseberries, passion fruit and lemons were in good demand. Ripe bananas were cheap. Heavy supplies of potatoes sold at verv low prices, and cabbage was still in short supply. With large quantities of green peas available, prices dropped slightly. Choice lines of pumpkins were in keen demand, but prices for other kinds were low. The mavket was heavily supplied with beans and carrots, which sold at very cheap rates. The demand for large quantities of poultry was fair, and there was good demand for ducks. Other prices were unchanged. Values were: —
