NEWCOMEHS TO RUN THE CHALLENGE STAKES DEFAULTER IN DEMAND [by telegraph OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Friday Easier cooing may affect the form a little at Trentham to-morrow and there are some fresh horses in the fields, but the first clay's running should prove reliable. There may ngaiii bo a surpriso in the Ngaio High-weight Handicap, spite of the victory of Camilla Horn, her form has not been impressive. Lustral may make tlio biggest improvement. Chat, a fresh horse, will appreciate the track, while Charade, Spender and Parry are all liable to run better than they did yesterday. Of the two-year-olds raced on the first day, form points to Rakahanga, Good Passage, Russian Ballet and Spendthrift for the Plunket N tirsery Handicap, but Good Passage will have to begin better with a furlong less to run. Ivar is a fresh horse with excellent form, and the southerner Kilrobe lias had four starts for three placings and then a win by five lengths over six furlongs, at Westland on a heavy track. Brazil is another newcomer with improving form. Vote lor Two-year-old Courteraft is unlikely to start in the Challenge Stakes. Of the older horses, Oratory and Paper Slipper may be supported, but Defaulter is likely to be the favourite. Of the other tuo-ycar-olds, Surmount and Dunmanway have chances. The latter was finishing on at the end of the Pacific Handicap. Dunstan is a good-looking colt who may improve sufficiently to make a showing, and Icing, in the smaller field, cannot be left out of calculations. Although Stretto has 9.6 in the Autumn Handicap, she is good, but at this weight it may not appeal to her connections to give her another race now. If she does start she appears sure to run- well. Wotan, making his first appearance at the may show up, and of the runners in tlio Thompson Catalogue, Siegmund, Arctic King, Brazen King and* Dictato must be seriously considered. Brazen King frill probably have the services of B. H, Morris. Lowepberg must have a Sood chance if the goiug becomes eavv, and Sunee looks the best of the light-weights. A good field in the Champion Hack Cup includes a fresh.horse in Stratto's stableniate, Jack Tar, whose northern form includes a win at his last start in a similar event on the second day at Te Rapa. Ap improver may be Happy Night. Sigurd's performance at the end of a very fast-run seven furlongs on the first day was impressive and ho ought to bo hard to beat ajjain. He is also in the Belmont Handicap, while his stable-mate, Accomplice, is in the Champion Hack Cup. Nevertheless, Sigurd's prospects look bright in tho latter race. N Open Sprint Form Paper Slipper, who heads tho Suburban Handicap, may run in the Challenge Stakes. Suleiman is sure to be supported after .Ms brilliant showing in tho Thompson Handicap and on their Railway Handicap efforts Laughing Lass, Ladv Ina and Brunhild should bo fancied. Top Row and Royal Bachelor will have to improve. Top, Row is also in the Hutt Handicap. Tray Bit is generally expected' to improve, as he failed to got off on terms on Thursday. Valmarch, who heads the Belmont Handicap, rfjll not bo overlooked after bis performance of yesterday. Alloa ran a bad race, but his winning form at Carterton was impressive. Relative, Majority; Lazybones and Nightcalin should all run well, and a fresh horse in Vadanoe will be remembered for his surprise on this course in January. Form points to Smoke Screen in the Hutt Handicap, and ho is certain of a big following. It may not be such a fast race as the Thompson Handicap. so Francis Drake should do better without Oratorv to chase. Similarly Whirling.'Top Row and Old Surrey may have a chance to improve. Big Dook is a possibility, And tlip' best of the light" weights may bo Gaily.
