The following is a cablegram from Brussels published in the New Zk.vi.and Hkhai.ij on March 15, 1888. giving the first news of an Arab attack on Suakim, a port on the Red Sea in AngloEgyptian Sudan:— "A startling report has been received here to the effect that Arabs in overwhelming numbers stormed and burned Suakim. and that the Egyptian garrison lost heavily in the tearful slaughter that followed. Many of the inhabitants took refuge on board the English warship which was in the bay. but. the Governor and Colonel Shakespere were killed. '"News has been received from Cairo of a partly confirmatory but less sensational character. Owing to the interruption of the telegraph lines no details arc to be had ' ■
