INSULATING NEW ZEALAND

Sir, —Poor Mr. Johnstone. Still hammering away at the obvious —at that which everybody knows —even Mr. Savage. But ho will not open his eyes to those deeper truths which Mr. Savage and his colleagues also know and havo dared to put into practice: those simple yet profound principles which will yet redeem not only New Zealand, but the rest of the world as well. What are these principles? Just this —that the people of any nation or country have an unlimited capacity to produce. They can also consume much of that production. The Government's duty is to own and control and administer a money service that will enable this production and consumption to proceed normally and progressively, resulting in ever-rising standards of living for all. Of course this ultimately spells the end of private enterprise, that is greed-enterprise. It has to be replaced by that higher form of private enterprise which aims to better not only oneself, but also one's neighbour. Thus it becomes Christian enter¥rise instead of private enterprise, hese principles are profound and farreaching, but they' are also simple. Those who would understand them—understand them sufficiently to dare to translate them into practice—must go a long, long way in their thinking. Then, and only then, will they realise how simple and profound these principles are. Let us be very thankful that we have in power in New Zealand today men possessed of this widened and enlightened outlook, coupled with that most necessary practical ability which will gradually translate the ideal into the actual. W. T. Hampson.
