NEW MAGISTRATE

SOUTHEEN SOLICITOR

MR. FREEMAN TRANSFERRED SOUTH AUCKLAND CIRCUIT [BY TELECKAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT]! INVERCARGILL, Thursday The stipendiary magistrate at Invercargill for the past three years, Mr. W. H. Freeman, has been transferred to South Auckland, with headquarters at Hamilton. Ho will leave for the north in a few weeks. Mr. It. C. Abernethy, a solicitor of Christchurch, has been appointed to succeed Mr. Freeman at Invercargill.

Mr. Freeman has had 30 years' experience in law, first as an officer of the Justice Department, and later as a solicitor at Hawera and New Plymouth. Born in May, 1891, ho began his career in the Public Service as a cadet in the Magistrate's Court in Rotorua in 1905, being transferred to Auckland the following year. In 1917 he was appointed acting-clerk of the Court at Eltham and Stratford, the position later being made permanent.

In 1022 he qualified as a solicitor and resigned from the department to enter practice. For several years he was a member of the firm of O'Dea, Bayley and Freeman at New Plymouth. He was appointed "magistrate in charge of the Invercargill district in 1935. Before going to Invercargill, Mr. Abernethy will serve on the Magistrate's Cogrt Bench in Wellington for a brief period. He has been in practice in Christchurch as a barrister and solicitor since 1923. He was born in Gore 47 years ago, his father being the Rev. Christopher Abernethy, formerly of Christchurch and Auckland.

Mr. Abernethy had a distinguished military career. He served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade in France in 1916 and 1917, and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry at Messines. In 1917 he was elected with the first batch of six officers from the New Zealand Division for service with the Indian Army. He was attached to the 120 th Rajputana Infantry on the North-West Frontier at Kohat, and in South Persia in 1918, and early in 1919. When he was demobilised he was captain and adjutant of the Regimental Depot.
