MINIMUM WEIGHT AUCKLAND PROPOSAL APPRENTICES' PRIVILEGE EXTRA PERMIT FOR MATAMATA The desirability of altering the minimum weight for flat races was discussed yesterday by the Auckland District Committee. Members expressed themselves as being in favour of a 7.0 minimum for all races, with an apprentice allowance up to 51b., to bring the possible weight to be carried to 6.9. The application of tho Matamata Racing Club for an extra day of racing this year was recommended to the conference, with the proviso that the permit, if one is available, be used on March "31 or " April 1, and that the two-day meeting conclude not later than April 2, the date already fixed for this meeting.

Bryce. Russell, rider of Golden Dart, who won the concluding event on the first day of the Westland Racing Club's meeting, was suspended for the remainder of the programme for interfering with Owlsgleam, who finished second, in the straight. This was the outcome of a complaint made by G. Humphries, rider of Owlsgleam, that Russell held one of his knees when the two horses were racing almost abreast_ about a furlong from home. Humphries stated that his mount was a neck in front at the time, but in a few strides she was a_ neck from Golden Dart and he considered the interference cost him the race. Russell denied touching Humphries, hut stated that owing to his mount boring in, he put his hand against Owlsgleam's wither in order to separate the pair so that he could command the use of his whip.
