SURF LIFE-SAVING

TEAM FROM NEW ZEALAND

PERFORMANCE IN SYDNEY

A fine lierformance was put up by the New Zealand surf life-saving team in the invitation rescue and resuscitation competition contested at Bondi Beach, Sydney, last Saturday week, in the course of the Australian surf championship carnival. The spectators numbered 15.000, and they witnessed a very spectacular display of marching, team efficiency and surf-boat racing. Opposed bv teams representing New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia, the New Zealand team gained second place, being defeated by Sow South W (lies by less than one point. The other teams scored at least 10 points fewer. The New Zealand team was greatly impressed by the elaborate appointments of tiie clubhouses of Sydney surf life-saving clubs. A typical example was the North Bondi pavilion, a handsome building comprising a spacious dance floor, clubroonis, shower rooms and a billiards room. The facilities also included gvmnastic equipment. Many of the surf life-saving clubs are assisted financially by local bodies, but. in spite of the splendid, unselfish service they render, thev receive few contributions from the public, and are mainly dependent upon profits front social functions and surf competitions organised by themselves.
