GROWTH OF OTAHUHU

OVER 6000 RESIDENTS MUCH BUILDING ACTIVITY The rapid growth of population in the borough of Otahuhu was indicated in reports submitted at the Borough Council meeting. The population at the census less than two years ago was just over 5000, tho residences actually occupied then being 1224. The Legal .and Finance Committee recommended that the council make application to the Commissioner of Transport for recognition as a borough of over 6000 population. The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., said tho progressive building over the past two years had raised the population to the figure when the borough would bo entitled to participate in tho petrol tax allocation. The building inspector reported that in the past two weeks permits had been issued for the erection of business premises and houses to a total valuation of £5040. In addition to that total tho State Housing Department had let tenders to local builders for the erection of 30 new houses on Sturges Estate at a total value of £40,000. The Mayor said there was no sign of any easing in the building activity, which hsd resulted in the total number of residences in the borough approximating 1500. Tho committee's report was adopted.
