LONG SAILING VOYAGE
FINNISH BARQUE PENANG ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND 71 DAYS FROM INDIAN OCEAN Running into port at Auckland before a fresh north-east wind at a steady eight knots, the Finnish barque Penang ended an uneventful 71 days' voyage from Juan de Nova, in the Indian Ocean, yesterday. One oiF the bestknown ships of the Finnish sailing fleet of Captain Gustav Erikson. the Penang is the second barque to reach Auckland in the past month, arriving five days after the larger vessel Pamir left for Noumea. Although Bluff was reached after an excellent passage of 51 days, adverse winds on the coast delayed the Penang's arrival, but on reaching the Hauraki Gulf the strong north-east wind enabled her to make a brave entry. All sail was carried until Tiritiri lighthouse was passed about 11.30 yesterday morning, but by the time the pilot launch was approached outside Rangitoto Channel the barque was down to headsails and topsails, the spanker having already been taken in. A fairly heavy following sea was running in the seaward end of Rangitoto Channel and, although the Auckland Harbour Board's tug William C. Daldy stood by, she was not called upon until North Head was reached. The tug took the Penang to an anchorage in the stream, where port clearance was given. The barque will be berthed this morning at the western side of King's Wharf. After discharging her cargo of guano, the Penang will sail for Spencer Gulf, South Australia, to load wheat for the United Kingdom.
