TAXICAB FARES

COURT CASE SEQUEL COUNCIL AMENDS BY-LAW INITIAL CHARGE OF 1/6 As a result of the 'recent Magistrate's Court decision that the action of city taxi drivers in charging a telephone fee of 6d a call was contrary to the city by-law, a recommendation was placed before the Auckland City Council by the Legal and By-laws Committee last night that the by-law should be amended to allow for a charge of Is Gd for the Hag-fall in place of Is. Mr. J. S. Stewart said that, although the taxi telephone charge had been illegal, the council desired to be magnanimous. A motion to increase the charge for the first mile from Is to Is 6d was coming before the council when the taxi drivers illegally imposed a telephone call Mr. J. Purtell suggested that the council should be particularly harsh on any driver overcharging. The recommendation was adopted.
