EUROPEAN MIGRANTS
INTEREST IN AUSTRALIA
LONDON, Feb. !)
Many Germans, mostly Jewish exiles, are inquiring in London about the possibility of migrating to Australia. There are also increasing numbers of inquiries from other foreigners, including Lithuanians, Estonians and Poles. About 30 Germans are referred every day to Australia House, where they fill in papers which are sent to Australia, They include people ready to provide the necessary £SOO guarantee, which, it is believed, is in many cases arranged by wealthy colleagues. The inquirers included a distinguished young scientist.
Evidently the recent statement from Australia, including the statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. Lyons, that the Commonwealth might act independently of the States, in conjunction with reports of the Commonwealth's prosperity, have stimulated the interest.
