SEMI-TIDAL MOVEMENT

PHENOMENON AT WANGANUI [by telegraph—own correspondent] "WANGANUI, Saturday Ati unusual occurrence on Virginia Lake on Wednesday morning last is reported by Mr. Cox, a city gardener. Mr. Cox was standing at 7.30 a.m. on the edge of the lake when suddenly the waters began to roll with a semitidal effect. They would recede at regular intervals, leaving a muddy foreshore. The maximum movement was about a yard. The movement continued until 7.40. The morning was dead calm, and there was no perceptible movement of the ground in the vicinity of the lake. The same morning, at 7.13, a long-distance earthquake was picked up by the recording instruments of the Dominion Observatory.
