LONG-LIVED FAMILIES AUSTRALIAN EXAMPLES Reference was made recently to tho longevity of the family of Buster Brown, who is still racing nearly 40 years after his grand-dam was foaled. Two Australian examples have come under notice, however, that easily beat the New Zealand interval. Wollunqua, dam of the Grand National Steeplechase winners Rakwool and Precocious, and the good hurdle horse Micronesia, is. now in her 28th year and she is believed to bo in foal to Cimbrian. Her 1933 foal, and s the last to race, is Stentor, by Windbag. Wollunqua was bred in 1910, by Petrillo from Condiment, a mare by Gossoon, who was produced in 1896. If Wollunqua's latest foal should still bo racing eight years hence, which is likely, the period of time between that foal and his grand-dam will be 50 years. Miss Kate, ancestress of Phar Lap, included in her 15 foals the mare Antelope, who was bred in 1883 and died iri 1908, in her 28th year, 'loward tho end of her stud career Antelope was bought by Mr. E. W. Alison, who bred her last two foals. The elder was Elegance, who, when she was 19 years old, produced Rolandra. This mare raced only at two and three years and then was retired to tho stud in 1930. However, the period covered bj' Antelope and Rolandra while the latter was still racing in 1929 is,4o years. Rolandra has had several foals to Windbag and a filly by Liberal, named Lady Montague, who is said to bo promising.
