Danger from Forest Fires
PATROLS AS RANGERS Patrols of the Automobile Association (Auckland) will, in the near future, have the status of honorary forest rangers, and will assist the State forests Department to preserve native bush by warning campers and tourists of the danger involved in the indiscriminate use of fires, and also by notifying forest officers of the existence and location of fires. Where they can extinguish small roadside fires sjieedily _ and without hindrance to their duties, assistance may also be given in this direction. Efforts being made by tho Government to diminish the all too-frequent fires which spoil largo areas of the country were outlined by the Commissioner of" State Forests, the Hon. F. Langstone, in a recent circular to the North Island Motor Union, a copy of which w.'is received at last week's meeting of the Automobile Association (Auckland). If the various motoring organisations desired to co-operate, the Commissioner stated, arrangements would bo made for warrants to bo issued appointing their patrols honorary forest rangers. The council of the Auckland Association decided to offer its co-operation.
