CHILDREN ON PARADE

PARTY AT MANSION HOUSE SCENE OF YOUTH AND BEAUTY [from our own correspondent] LONDON, Jan. 7 Class distinctions may still bo very strict in London, but in one of jthe most majestic houses in London one night this week royalty rubbed shoulders with the rabble, members of tho aristocracy mingled freely with cooks, nursemaids, sweeps and humble policeman, aud, to make the scene still moro extraordinary, Cleopatra was to bo seen dancing a stately measure with a Huffy white kitten, and Hen Hur with tho daintiest of Dolly Vardens.

The occasion was the juvenile fancy dress ball given by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of London, Sir Harry and Lady Twyford at tho Mansion House. Nearly 1000 children, whoso ages ranged from six to the early 'teens, took part in the grand march, which was leel by the band of the Scots Guards playing "Light of Foot." The costtijnes were a delicious blend of beauty, originality and humour, and any attempt at judging them would have been an altogether iinpossiblo task. An excellent Punch and Judy show and a conjuring entertainment were given during the evening. Among tne privileged few to take supper privately in tho boudoir with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress were Mrs. W. J. wifo of the High Commissioner for New Zealand, and Miss Gwen Jordan. Mrs. Jordan wore a gown. of ivory and ice-blue cloque and lame, and Miss Jordan, who is on vacation from her boarding school at Ashford, Kent, was a charming figure in a frock and coatee of posied sheer in cream and pastel shades.
