HOUSING POLICY

THE NATIONAL PAETY REMOVAL OF RESTRICTIONS STATEMENT BY MR. HAMILTON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday Tho National Party's housing policy was defined by tho Loader of the Opposition, tho Hon. Adam Hamilton, in an interview this evening. He criticised the housing methods adopted by the Government and said the National Party would work in the closest harmony with private housebuilding organisations so as to make modern houses available to a greater number of people than was tho case at present. Mr. Hamilton added that the unwarranted restrictions placed on the housebuilder by tho present Government would be removed. "There is no questioning tho fact that public opinion is that the Government's housing scheme Jinn been a gigantic failure," said Mr. Hamilton. "While it is true that a, considerable number of houses are being built, it is equally truo that tho Government's incursions into tho field of housebuilding with its unfair competition have practically wrecked the industry previously carried on by private enterprise. Even with the large contracts they have placed, there are still not as many houses being built as was the case in the past, prior to the inauguration of their scheme.-

"The unwarranted restrictions placed on the housebuilder by the present Government will bo removed," continued Mr. Hamilton, "and property owners will have their rights and the incentive to build still more homes restored to them.''
