AUDACIOUS THEFT

TOBACCONIST'S LOSS £26 STOLEN FROM SHOP TILL ROBBED IN DAYLIGHT An audacious theft took place in Parnell Road yesterday morning, when £26 18s was stolen from the shop of Mr. Keitli S. Logie, ' hairdresser anil tobacconist. The shop was left unattended lor not more than four minutes, just before 8 a.m., and, as the majority of the money was placed well down beneath the counter, Mr. Logie considers the thief must have been familiar with the premises. The counter of the shop, which is near the intersection of Alma Street, is too high for the thief to have leaned over, so that he must have gone through the hairdressing saloon to get behind it. Of the money, £lB Bs, mostly in notes, was in a cigar box, placed on a shelf well down below the counter, and right at the back. Silver to the value of £B, rolled in paper, was taken from behind the till, a wooden drawer. To get at this money it was necessary to draw the till right out. From the till itself a 10s note was taken, but apparently because of the necessity for speed about 30s in small change was left. At the time of the theft Mr. Logie was in the yard behind the shop, and Mrs. Logie had' gone upstairs to attend to her baby. She was not out of the shop for more than four minutes. Mr. Logie has been in business on the premises for only six months.
