NO DEATH TRAPS

new paeroa line I ABSENCE OF CROSSINGS J HEAVY TOLL IN THE PAST [by telegraph—speciAt. reporter] P AERO A, Thursday "Another new departure will be the elimination of death-traps ,on this journey," said the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, at the ceremony of turning the first sod of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway to-day. "There will be no road crossings on this line. We are faced with tremendous expenditure to do away with these death-traps throughout the country. Since 1918, and probably longer, there have been speeches about the need for removing ihem, and I thought it time to stop talking and do something. "Since 1925 we have killed 190 innocent people and maimed 400, most of them permanently crippled." said Mr. Semple. "There are over 500 of these crossings and we have sorted out 250 for elimination. We are going ahead as fast as we can, but there has been some delay, due to the steel shortage caused by the armament race. In the construction of the line there will be no level crossings on main or secondary highways, and we will try to make provision for sale crossings into fanners land."
