ANNUAL REGATTA

ANNIVERSARY FIXTURE

GALA AT CALLIOPE DOCK RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED DECLARATION OF HANDICAPS The Auckland Anniversary regatta will ho held on the \Vniteniatn Harbour to-morrow, and, if fnvoured by fine weather, should bo a great success. The first regatta on the Auckland Harbour was held on September 18, 1840, the day 011 which officials of the Government hoisted the JJritish flag on the promontory known as Point Hritoinart. On that occasion the programme consisted of only three races, whereas now 51 events are provided, including 21 for yachts. In 18-1 2 die first anniversary regatta was held, and after a lapse of five years the, event was kept up annually until 1800, when it was decided to (jive systematic character to the celebration. The resolve to hold an annual regatta has only heen broken once. This was in 11)00, when the South African War interfered with the arrangements.

The Calliope Dock will be used as the headquarters for the regatta to-morrow owing to no warship being available to act as flagshlp. A splendid programmo of swimming races and novelty events will be carried out in tho dock, and, in order to cope with tho traffic, the committeo has arranged for the ferry steamer Peregrine to leave tho Ferries for tho dock at 1.30 p.m. and again at 2.15 p.m. Jn addition, launches will leave from the Admiralty Steps at frequent intervals, commencing at 10 a.m.

The entries, totalling over 300, constitute a record in the history of tho regatta. For the sailing races, no fewer than 250 entries have been received, and large post entries for the midget class and model yachts section aro expected to como to hand to-morrow morning. In the race for class Z, 12ft Gin Cornwall Cup boats, 110 fewer than 32 entries have been received. Another event that is likely to create a great deal of interest Is the race for the Heather Cup, for A class keel yachts, for which the record entry of 15 of Auckland s fastest, keelers has been listed. The competitors include tho well-known yacht Rainbow, which has not raced in Auckland for over 23 years. . All sailing events will start and finish on the motor-vessel Endeavour, which is for the use of the regatta officials only. She will be moored just above the dock, and the yachts must keep on the south side of the flagship. Owing to the tide being low when the A class yachts start, competitors in this class are required to round a mark boat (red flag) north of the Bastion beacon, instead of the usual mark. In tho event of the weather conditions being favourable, tho races for motor-boats will be carried out on the north side of the Endeavour, but should rough weather prevail tho location for the motorboats will bo between the Prince's and Western Wharves. The first race will start at 9.45 a.m., and other races will follow at intervals of ten minutes.
