HIGHWAYS EXPENDITURE

EXTRAVAGANCE ALLEGED WORK IN BOTH ISLANDS Extravagant spending of public money on unnecessary highway work, while essential work was not being done, was mentioned yesterday by the Rev. W. C. Wood, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, who has returned after motoring 2500 miles in the North and South Islands. "I was very much impressed with the roads in both Islands," Mr. Wood said. "Their general condition/reflects great credit on all concerned. We covered 2000 miles with no inconvenience whatever. '"There is, however, extravagant expenditure of public money, on highway construction. On the West Coast they are building overhead bridges where there is 110 justification. "Whenever the easing of a grade or improving of a corner means safety it is money well spent, but in both islands roads perfectly efficient for years to come are beinc scrapped, and money is being spent extravagantly," Mr. Wood added. "At the same time there are death-traps in various places not receiving attention."
